Observation Narrative
Sampling area located on a level, fairly high alluvial terrace by the Chickahominy River. The area floods 1-4 times per year, according to landowner Irvine Wilson. The surface soils are sandy, possibly overlying a clay subsoil, based on the profile observed on the nearby cut-bank of river. Vegetation is a mature forest dominated by large-diameter Quercus michauxii. Many vines (especially Smilax and Vitis spp.) occur in the shrub and herb layers, while graminoids dominate the herbaceous flora. Non-native plants have very low cover.
